June 2026 update of African American Architects As of June 2026, there are 2,781 reported African American Architects. By gender, this is 740 women, 2,040 men, and 1 non-binary person. This is currently a mix of entries from the former Directory of African American Architects (DAAA) and entries in this Directory of Diverse Architects and Designers (DDAD). We encourage anyone who was listed in the DAA to provide their information in the new DDAD as it was not possible to move that database to this new tool. We will continue to verify and cross-reference to ensure the number is as accurate as possible.
Since the publication of the first Directory of African American Architects in 1991, we have continued to update our original data. We maintain a broad network of contacts with African American architects nationwide and with the organizations that represent them.
We set out to prepare the first directory of African American Architects in late 1989. Our goal was to substantiate with statistics what we and others had concluded on the basis of anecdote: that African American architects considered themselves underrepresented in a largely "white gentleman's profession."
The Directories of Diverse Architects and Designers is the child of the Directory of African-American Architects, and is a project of NOMA, the National Organization of Minority Architects. The DDAD's goal is to catalog, educate and enlighten.
